Radwanska, Dushevina move into championship Match

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Two of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's most promising young stars will square off for their maiden titles on Sunday as the championship singles final of the $145,000 Nordea Nordic Open hits the hardcourts of Stockholm, Sweden.

Russia's Vera Dushevina was the first to advance to the final, defeating Germany's Julia Goerges, 64 57 63. The match was full of momentum swings, beginning with the first set, where Goerges was leading 4-1 before dropping five games in a row. Dushevina then went up 5-2 in the second set before dropping five games, including squandering a match point up 5-4. The No.8-seeded Russian raced out to another large lead in the third set, going up 5-1, and this time closed out the German qualifier handily.

This will be Dushevina's second career Tour singles final, following her runner-up finish at the Tier II grass court stop in Eastbourne two years ago. There, she had arguably the best week of her career, ousting Amélie Mauresmo for her first Top 10 victory en route to the championship round where she was stopped by Kim Clijsters. She had been to two more semifinals in between that performance and this week, but had never gotten to another final.

Awaiting Dushevina in the final is No.2-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, who was forced to play catch up Saturday after rain washed out her quarterfinal match Friday. The 18-year-old bounced Caroline Wozniacki in her first match of the day, 64 61, then beat another young star, Tsvetana Pironkova, 64 63, later on.

Radwanska's achievements from last year, which included victories over Elena Dementieva, Anastasia Myskina and Venus Williams, a run to the fourth round of Wimbledon and a semifinal finish at the Tier II stop in Luxembourg, warranted a nod for the Tour's Newcomer of the Year Award, presented at Miami earlier this year. She started 2006 ranked outside the Top 300 and found herself on the verge of a Top 50 debut by the end of the year. She has cracked the Top 50 as well as the Top 40 this year and the list of accomplishments keeps growing.

The two finalists have met once before, last October in the qualifying of Linz. It was the younger Radwanska who came out on top there, winning easily, 61 63.

Radwanska is bidding to become the first ever Tour singles titlist from Poland.

The Nordea Nordic Light Open doubles final was contested Saturday, with No.1 seeds Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual beating unseeded duo Chan Chin-Wei and Tetiana Luzhanska, 61 57 106. Medina Garrigues and Ruano Pascual were playing their fourth Tour doubles final of the season but won their first title, after runner-up finishes at Hobart, Amelia Island and 's-Hertogenbosch.

This is the fifth staging of the Nordea Nordic Light Open. Past champions are Svetlana Kuznetsova (2002), Anna Smashnova (2003), Alicia Molik (2004), Katarina Srebotnik (2005) and Zheng Jie (2006).
