Russian-Ukrainian Pairing wins Warsaw on debut

WARSAW, Poland - Vera Dushevina and Tatiana Perebiynis may have been shut out of the singles draw in Warsaw, but when it came to doubles the story was much different. They put the finishing touches on an impressive title run at the J&S Cup Sunday by beating Elena Likhovtseva and Elena Vesnina in a match tie-break championship final.

Dushevina and Perebiynis' singles tournaments ended in the qualifying rounds, to eventual qualifiers Kateryna Bondarenko and Tsvetana Pironkova, respectively. As an unseeded and largely unheralded team in the team event, however, they were impressive; they opened with a 62 64 first round win over Anna Chakvetadze and Agnieszka Radwanska, then beat Tathiana Garbin and Michaella Krajicek next, 76(5) 57 108.

It was in the semifinals that the Russian-Ukrainian duo burst into prominence; a 62 64 defeat of No.1-seeded Mara Santangelo and Katarina Srebotnik set the stage for another potential upset in the final, which ended up happening, as they took down the No.2-seeded Russian pair of Likhovtseva and Vesnina, 75 36 102.

The victory brings Dushevina her first Tour trophy of any kind, while Perebiynis claims her fifth Tour trophy, all of which are in doubles. She had won before at 2002 Tashkent (with Tatiana Poutchek), 2003 Sopot (with Silvija Talaja), 2005 Acapulco (with Alina Jidkova) and 2005 Warsaw (with Barbora Strycova).

Dushevina and Perebiynis were playing as a team for the very first time.

While the eventual winners were responsible for dismissing the No.1 and No.2-seeded pairs, the other two seeded teams fell victim to other combos. No.3 seeds Meilen Tu and Galina Voskoboeva were beaten by Bondarenko sisters Alona and Kateryna in the second round, while No.4 seeds Jarmila Gajdosova and Vladimira Uhlirova were ousted by Garbin and Krajicek in the first round.
